CURRENT PROJECT

SEVENTEEN

Days after the 2018 school shooting in Parkland, Florida, Ron and librettist Portia Kamons began working on an artistic response to the relentless plague of American gun violence.

Their attention focused on the rising generation of young people channeling their grief and anger into deliberate and effective action. They exploded onto social media; they organized, they connected with established youth-led gun reform groups – first in Chicago, then all around the country.  These extraordinary young people were bringing commitment, determination, and energy to the biggest challenges of their time: racial, social & economic justice, the environment, and mental health. This is their story, in their own words.

SEVENTEEN is a snapshot that tries to capture a moment in their history, and ours, when they begin to emerge as a game-changing generation.

Ron’s friend and colleague Jamie Bernstein encouraged this work from the very beginning. As SEVENTEEN’s Director of Narration, she brought a lifetime’s deep knowledge about the harmony between music and activism. The Orlando Philharmonic and  music director Eric Jacobsen were dream partners, bringing an exceptional combination of artistic excellence and vision to inspire audiences through the transformative power of live music.

PAST PROJECTS

GOLDEN STATE OF MIND

Golden State of Mind is a 16-minute symphonic suite depicting the beauty & drama of the California landscape and its cultural diversity, in three movements. “Yosemite” reflects the grandeur and majesty of its ancient sequoias, waterfalls and vistas.  “San Andreas” is the flip side: nature unhinged. The repeated cycle of natural disaster is part and parcel of the California experience. “Olvera Street” pays tribute to the oldest section of Los Angeles that was the center of the Golden State’s Mexican heritage.

“Yosemite” (formerly titled “Greetings!”) was given its world premiere performance by The Marin Symphony, conducted by Music Director Alasdair Neale.

I was gratified by the warm audience response. Congratulations again on a super piece — all the more impressive, as I said to the audience on Saturday, for it being your first time at that particular rodeo!
